1 Plurality

چکیده
Although there is striking variation across languages (and even within a single language) in how the plural is formally expressed, it is relatively easy to indicate what plurality is from a morphological point of view: the plural is one of the instances of the inflectional category of number. From a semantic point of view, however, the concept of plurality is much more di↵use. To start with, the general folk linguistic intuition that being plural expresses being more than one is inaccurate. For example, while (1-a) suggests that there are multiple stains on the carpet, (1-b) does not suggest that only the carrying of multiple guns is illegal, nor does (1-c) suggest it might be the case that there has been a solitary alien walking the earth.

Informational requirements of social choice rules to avoid the Condorcet loser
I consider informational requirements of social choice rules satisfying anonymity, neutrality, monotonicity, and efficiency, and never choosing the Condorcet loser. Depending on the number of agents and the number of alternatives, either the plurality rule or a plurality with a runoff is characterized. In some cases, the plurality rule is the most selective rule among the rules operating on the...
متن کاملFaster Algorithms for Computing Plurality Points
Let V be a set of n points in R, which we call voters, where d is a fixed constant. A point p ∈ R is preferred over another point p′ ∈ R by a voter v ∈ V if dist(v, p) < dist(v, p′). A point p is called a plurality point if it is preferred by at least as many voters as any other point p′. We present an algorithm that decides in O(n logn) time whether V admits a plurality point in the L2 norm an...
متن کاملA plurality problem with three colors and query size three
The Plurality problem - introduced by Aigner \cite{A2004} - has many variants. In this article we deal with the following version: suppose we are given $n$ balls, each of them colored by one of three colors. A \textit{plurality ball} is one such that its color class is strictly larger than any other color class. Questioner wants to find a plurality ball as soon as possible or state there is no,...
متن کاملPlurality Consensus in Arbitrary Graphs: Lessons Learned from Load Balancing
We consider plurality consensus in networks of n nodes. Initially, each node has one of k opinions. The nodes execute a (randomized) distributed protocol to agree on the plurality opinion (the opinion initially supported by the most nodes). In certain types of networks the nodes can be quite cheap and simple, and hence one seeks protocols that are not only time efficient but also simple and spa...
متن کاملDistributive Pluractionality and Plurality in Ingush: The case of G.uozh/lieg
Pluractionality, also referred to as verbal plurality (Yu 2003) or event plurality (Wood 2007), is a morphological category that indicates some sort of “multiplicity” in the semantic reading of a verb. The prototypical interpretation of a pluractional verb is that of iterativity (repeated actions). This reading is illustrated in the following examples from Ingush, a Nakh language of the Northea...
